The NUCCAT events programme is designed to deliver practical and relevant subjects to enhance our members’ practice and understanding of topical issues. We discuss and debate pertinent issues in HE and share best practice in matters relating to credit accumulation and transfer, quality assurance, academic regulation, and supporting and enhancing academic practice. Speakers are drawn from policy makers and leading HE practitioners, with plenty of opportunities for discussion. Our events programme provides an excellent opportunity for delegates to network, share best practice, discuss topical issues and much more!

Mind the gap
Levelling the playing field and closing the gap between educational aspiration and achievement for all students.
Friday 10th May 2019
Room S104 (‘Dovedale’) at the Kedleston Road Campus of the University of Derby
Is it tolerable that a student’s academic outcomes should be impacted by their heritage, physical impairment or social background? NUCCAT believes that attainment gaps should be closed and welcomes colleagues from the Universities of Derby, Leeds Beckett and Sheffield Hallam who are keen to share their experiences in tackling such barriers to student success.
Presenters and their sessions:
- Jo Astley, Widening Access Manager at the University of Derby on ‘Deficit discourses of aspiration in white working-class male students’
- Sue Smith, Head of Curriculum Development in the Centre for Learning and Teaching at Leeds Beckett University on ‘The attainment and experience of our LBU BAME students – what do colleagues and student perspectives tell us? (and what can we do about it?….)’
- Abdullah Okud, President of Sheffield Hallam Students Union, asks ‘Why is my curriculum white?’
